Original Medicare Enrollment

Original Medicare is what is known as Part A and Part B . Enrollment is automatic for those who are drawing social security. If you are not drawing social security, you will need to enroll in Part A (if still working) and part B (if not working or choose to). When you are still employed and have qualified coverage from an employer in most cases Part A coverage is secondary to your group health plan from work. More and more people are choosing Medicare plans over traditional group employee coverage. Some companies now offer Medicare type plans.

When should I start looking into my Medicare options?

This is based on individual preference, but 6 months prior gives a good cushion of time to start looking into Medicare options and get a "Medicare 101". You can enroll three months prior to your 65th birthday on the first of that month. You can speak with a broker before enrolling if you are a person who likes to plan ahead and get all their ducks in a row. You can enroll in Medicare online by Clicking Here . You can enroll by phone at 1-800-MEDICARE, or you can go to your local social security office and enroll in person.

  • “We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.”
